Rosendo Porro Cuesta

1981, Granollers, Spain

The great dilemma of the artist is that, by expressing an idea, by realising it, he is already distorting it. The deepest emotions are intangible, ethereal, abstract. Rosendo Porro Cuesta manages to give form to the anti-form, to express the inexpressible, the invisible. In an exercise of necessary humility, but with an extraordinary aesthetic power, he does not place us in front of an idea but in front of its shadow. Its essence, its heart, its trace. An empty piano, traced by its mere silhouette, is a perfect way of defining music: without the piano, music does not exist; and yet the important thing about music has never been the piano.

Rosendo Porro Cuesta

Is the piano there? Or is it just a snapshot of a fleeting moment, a spectre, a tribute to what was or what could have been? This deconstruction of objects, a constant in Porro Cuesta, allows the spectator to share the same air that runs through the work, the idea, the soul of the instrument. We do not know if the weight of this presence is in front of us, or above all in our brain. The lines and profiles dance with our retina and our memory while we, condemned to not being able to see the surface, are immersed in the vertiginous depth. Angles and straight lines are, more than ever, balconies. Windows. Precipices.
