Hailing from a creative family, his father was an artist, as a child an inspired Lieverse loved to draw and paint. His body of work reflects his thoughts, preoccupations and observations of the world we live in. Identity is the central theme and is weaved throughout his work in all its formats, whether painting symmetrically perfect portraits on canvas, or using cowhides for his Hybrid Series – exploring ideas of genetically enhanced perfection parallel to the changing accepted concepts of beauty. Whilst the human face and the theme of identity seem to be evergreen for Lieverse, new ways to express his ideas and raise pertinent questions are important to him.
Lieverse often uses Persian and Turkish carpets, an important aspect of cultural heritage from the near East, as a base for monumental portraits. Intuitively he allows the blossoming flowers of these hand knotted rugs to guide his painterly strokes. The carpet’s gentle tones transmit warmth to the monochromatic portrait. The flower designs have their own story, symbols of paradise that fuse together with facial features in an effort to tell another.
Christiaan Lieverse has been a part of Villa del Arte Galleries for over 15 years, featuring across their spaces in solo and collective exhibitions. His pieces have been shown far and wide from New York to Java, and are in notable private collections.
Procedente de una familia creativa —su padre era artista—, desde niño el inspirado Lieverse mostró una gran pasión por el dibujo y la pintura. Su obra refleja sus pensamientos, inquietudes y observaciones sobre el mundo en el que vivimos. La identidad es el tema central y se entrelaza en todo su trabajo, en cualquiera de sus formatos: desde retratos de simetría perfecta sobre lienzo hasta el uso de pieles de vaca en su Hybrid Series, donde explora ideas de perfección genéticamente mejorada en paralelo a los cambiantes conceptos aceptados de belleza. Aunque el rostro humano y el tema de la identidad parecen ser inagotables para Lieverse, para él es fundamental encontrar nuevas formas de expresar sus ideas y plantear preguntas relevantes.
Lieverse utiliza con frecuencia alfombras persas y turcas —un importante elemento del patrimonio cultural de Oriente Próximo— como base para retratos monumentales. De manera intuitiva, permite que las flores en plena eclosión de estos tapices anudados a mano guíen sus pinceladas. Los tonos suaves de la alfombra transmiten calidez al retrato monocromático. Los diseños florales tienen su propia historia, símbolos del paraíso que se fusionan con los rasgos faciales en un intento de contar una nueva narrativa.
Christiaan Lieverse forma parte de Villa del Arte desde hace más de 15 años, con presencia en sus diferentes espacios tanto en exposiciones individuales como colectivas. Sus obras se han exhibido en numerosos lugares, desde Nueva York hasta Java, y forman parte de destacadas colecciones privadas.
