Since gaining her degree in Artscience at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in The Hague (NL) in 2008, Jennifer Townley has been working as an independent kinetic artist, creating mechanical sculptures that instantly pique the viewer’s interest.

Powered by electric motors her mac hines generate repetitive patterns that twist, merge, and cascade as individually sculpted elements rotate on a single axis. Shapes are constantly being distorted and transformed, patterns convert smoothly into new patterns and independent forms seemingly unite to subtly interfere with the viewer’s mind.

The works derive from Townley’s fascination with science, with an emphasis on physics, engineering and mathematics. Geometric patterns in Islamic art or mathematical drawings of Dutch artist M. C. Escher often serve as inspiration. Images where lines and figures match each other so perfectly they could be repeated indefinitely. This infinity, regularity and obedience is what Townley also finds fascinating about mechanical machines; they are robust, strenuous and seemingly immortal.

In her art, Townley manages to fuse her love for mechanics, with an interest in human perception. Working on the basis that people react well to symmetry, order, repetition, she plays with these ideas, her patterns, in the midst of seeming chaos bring a sense of calm, creating an almost hypnotic effect on the viewer.

Her sculptures celebrate the beauty and possibilities of mechanics while establishing elusive moments in which tangled figures suddenly seem perfectly aligned or geometrical shapes become an organic undivided unity.

Townley’s work features in multiple public and private international collections and has been exhibited across the globe from Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, UAE, Dubai, USA and throughout the Netherlands.

Desde que obtuvo su título en Artscience en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de La Haya (Países Bajos) en 2008, Jennifer Townley trabaja como artista cinética independiente, creando esculturas mecánicas que captan de inmediato el interés del espectador.

Impulsadas por motores eléctricos, sus máquinas generan patrones repetitivos que se retuercen, se fusionan y se despliegan mientras elementos esculpidos individualmente giran sobre un único eje. Las formas se distorsionan y transforman constantemente; los patrones se convierten suavemente en otros nuevos, y figuras independientes parecen unirse para provocar sutiles interferencias en la percepción del espectador.

Las obras surgen de la fascinación de Townley por la ciencia, con un énfasis especial en la física, la ingeniería y las matemáticas. Los patrones geométricos del arte islámico o los dibujos matemáticos del artista holandés M. C. Escher suelen ser fuente de inspiración: imágenes donde líneas y figuras encajan con tal perfección que podrían repetirse infinitamente. Esta idea de infinito, regularidad y obediencia es también lo que le fascina de las máquinas mecánicas: son robustas, tenaces y aparentemente inmortales.

En su arte, Townley consigue fusionar su amor por la mecánica con su interés por la percepción humana. Partiendo de la base de que las personas reaccionan positivamente ante la simetría, el orden y la repetición, juega con estas ideas: sus patrones, en medio de un aparente caos, transmiten una sensación de calma y generan un efecto casi hipnótico en el espectador.

Sus esculturas celebran la belleza y las posibilidades de la mecánica, al mismo tiempo que establecen momentos fugaces en los que figuras enredadas parecen alinearse perfectamente o formas geométricas se convierten en una unidad orgánica indivisible.

El trabajo de Townley forma parte de múltiples colecciones públicas y privadas internacionales y ha sido expuesto en todo el mundo, desde Italia, República Checa, Alemania, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Dubái, Estados Unidos y en numerosos espacios de los Países Bajos.
