Chelsea Davine was born in London but for the past 25 years has made Barcelona her home. She is a painter using primarily oil on canvas or black steel. She embeds copper, gold and silver leaf between thin washes of paint or ‘velos’. Light infuses her work and reflects the world around her. Her inspiration comes from the Pyrenees or the ‘Costa Brava’ coastline recording the passage of time and ebb and flow of the Sea. Chelsea captures fleeting moments as the seasons change using techniques such as ‘Chiaroscuro’ to create depth or Palladian’s theory of harmony in richly layered, elegant abstract paintings.
Chelsea’s work does not seek to simply capture an image, but to create an impression of a moment in time, to bottle an essence and release it onto a canvas. Her work is rich both in colour and content using predominantly oils with gold, silver and copper leaf her abstract impressionistic work is elegant and nuanced. Her most recent body of work REFLECT epitomises her passion for reflecting light, beauty and her inner thoughts as she works.
Trained at Chelsea Art College in London her work is inspired by her sculpture background which is visible in her large format black steel paintings and her oil paintings by her love of nature, especially the forests and valleys of the Pyrennees and the sea and rugged coastline of the Costa Brava. Her work is held in private collections around the world.
