Iván Puñal, born in Madrid, finished his studies as a technical architect in 1999, and soon began to tie together his education and interests in photography, video art and musical creation. Puñal abandoned his professional career in 2008 to work full-time as a filmmaker, specializing in performative video creation and live music performances. He has participated in the artistic residency “Arte en la Tierra” in Logroño, Spain, in the international video art festival “Proyector 2019″ in Madrid, created live visuals for the “Little Opera” festival in Zamora in 2019, and for the inauguration of Art Madrid 2020. Currently, he develops his artistic work focusing on the creation of art through the use of adversarial neural networks and artificial intelligence.

In 2025, Puñal was awarded First Prize at PhotoEspaña for his groundbreaking audiovisual project Through the Glass, a work that not only explores the poetics and opacity of artificial intelligence but also proposes a critical reflection on the rapid advance of AI and the emergence of a superintelligence capable of redefining our relationship with technology and human thought.

“We still don’t know how to respond, what to think, or which decisions to make. Our relationship with these machines is profoundly ambiguous. We know they don’t feel emotions as we do, yet we often speak to them as if they did. At the same time, we cannot ignore the implications their existence may hold for the future of our species.”

Each piece can be configured to play in continuous loops, with smooth transitions—such as crossfades—between visual elements, avoiding abrupt interruptions and fostering an immersive, fluid experience. Additionally, all pieces are accompanied by original soundscapes composed by the artist, conceived as a sensory extension of the proposed visual universe.

Iván Puñal, nacido en Madrid, finalizó sus estudios de arquitectura técnica en 1999 y pronto comenzó a vincular su formación con sus intereses en la fotografía, el videoarte y la creación musical. En 2008 abandonó su carrera profesional para dedicarse por completo al cine, especializándose en la creación de video performativo y en actuaciones musicales en directo. Ha participado en la residencia artística Arte en la Tierra en Logroño, en el festival internacional de videoarte Proyector 2019 en Madrid, ha creado visuales en directo para el festival Little Opera en Zamora en 2019 y para la inauguración de Art Madrid 2020. Actualmente, desarrolla su trabajo artístico centrado en la creación mediante el uso de redes neuronales adversarias e inteligencia artificial.

En 2025, Puñal fue galardonado con el Primer Premio en PhotoEspaña por su innovador proyecto audiovisual Through the Glass, una obra que no solo explora la poética y la opacidad de la inteligencia artificial, sino que también propone una reflexión crítica sobre el rápido avance de la IA y la aparición de una superinteligencia capaz de redefinir nuestra relación con la tecnología y el pensamiento humano. Through the Glass es una sorprendente y bella exploración de la inteligencia artificial y de nuestra limitada comprensión de la misma.

«Aún no sabemos cómo responder, qué pensar o qué decisiones tomar. Nuestra relación con estas máquinas es profundamente ambigua. Sabemos que no sienten emociones como nosotros, y sin embargo a menudo les hablamos como si las tuvieran. Al mismo tiempo, no podemos ignorar las implicaciones que su existencia puede tener para el futuro de nuestra especie».

Cada pieza puede configurarse para reproducirse en bucle continuo, con transiciones suaves —como fundidos encadenados— entre los elementos visuales, evitando interrupciones bruscas y favoreciendo una experiencia inmersiva y fluida. Además, todas las obras están acompañadas por paisajes sonoros originales compuestos por el propio artista, concebidos como una extensión sensorial del universo visual propuesto.
